Ball Dropping


In this picture these kids are in Mr. Kellogg’s class. They are going around tables and all the tables have different balls on them. They are going to take a meter stick and take the ball that is on the table. They put it up to the meter stick and then dropped the ball and saw how high it would bounce up. Then they recorded their score on a paper that has these boxes that you put your score in. We were learning about gravity. Gravity is pulling the ball back down to the earth or the ground. We were seeing which ball would bounce the highest. We found out that the workout ball bounced the highest. We also had other balls like a tennis ball, bouncy ball, baseball and a Nerf ball.

Quarter Sliding


I was in Mr. Willis’ class for science. We learned about Newton’s First Law. I learned if you stacked 4 quarters up and slid 1 quarter on the table and hit the stack, 1 quarter on the bottom of the stack will slide out. I observed that when I slid the quarter it glided. We changed the experiment by stacking 2 quarters and slid them on the table at the stack and 1 quarter slid out. We got the same answer! That was a surprise. I expected two quarters would make two slide out. I learned by doing this experiment that if something is in motion it stays that way unless a force stops it. I also learned that when something is at rest is stays at rest.

Mr. Kellogg's workshop

I was in Mr.Kellogg’s workshop. I bounced some balls with a ruler. We bounced a tennis ball, a bouncy ball, a basket ball, a baseball, fitness ball but that’s all I remember. We had a partner but I don’t remember who mine was. This is how it worked:
1. One person held the ruler and the other dropped the ball.
2. The person holding the ball drops the ball.
3. The person holding the ruler measures how far it bounced.
4. Then you record it on a sheet.
The ball that bounced the highest to me was the fitness ball. It bounced as high as the ruler!

Ms. Peterson's Science Workshop

In Ms. Peterson’s science workshops, Ms. Peterson blew up a balloon and we tied it to a string that went across the room. When Ms. Peterson let go, the balloon flew across the room. Then we put pennies in it, and it didn’t go very far. It only went about half as far as it did without pennies in it. The next day we tried different balloons. We tried a yellow, lumpy balloon, a long, straight, green balloon, and a small, red balloon. The yellow balloon went the farthest and the smoothest. The red balloon didn’t go anywhere but it spun in circles. The green balloon simply deflated immediately. When we timed the normal sized balloon, it took only 4 seconds to get across the room! The law we studied was: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” That was what Sir Isaac Newton said in his third law of motion. I wonder why the red balloon spun in circles, the green balloon deflated, and the yellow balloon went the fastest and smoothest.

This is Marybeth’s science workshop. We were learning about Newton’s Second Law. In this picture we were playing bingo. We wrote words on a piece of paper that had to do with Newton’s Second Law. The words were hypothesis, experiment, data, mass, velocity, speed, force, motion and question. Marybeth would say one of the definitions for one of the words and we would cross the word off as many times as it was written. We tried to get five in a row. When we got five in a row, we would jump up out of our chair and yell “BINGO!" We had fun doing it.

The Air Around Us
